Are your cabinets cluttered with makeup you got several years ago? Is your trash can overflowing with shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and liquid soap bottles? With three girls in the house, ours was! That is until I discovered that I could collect this waste, recycle it, AND donate the proceeds to STR! Did you know that "Cosmetics - both skin care and makeup -aren't meant to grow old with you." Heh heh heh... whoops! (according to:http://www.fitnessmagazine.com/beauty/makeup/lips/when-should-i-throw-my-old-cosmetics-out/) "Products are developed to last a year or two," says Peter Pugliese, M.D., a skin physiologist in Reading, Pennsylvania. (HEY! I know that place!) However, contamination can occur at any time, since makeup is always in contact with germ-prone areas like your eyes, mouth and fingers. In general, always toss anything that has changed color or consistency or has a bad odor. Otherwise, use these guidelines to assess the shelf life of common beauty products.
And according to this article: http://jylcraven.com/2013/04/spring-cleaning-the-shelf-lives-of-shampoo-and-conditioner/ things you might not have considered, like Shampoo and Conditioner, also expire. As a couponer/stockpiler of personal care goods and evidently, a hoarder of makeup, I HAD been wondering about this for a while, so I'm glad I finally bothered to look it up. First I resolved to clean out my make up drawer, which for me was no small feat. I may or may not have eyeshadow I got in high school...(Heh heh heh, whoops!) I also threw out blush and eyeshadow I NEVER wore or liked and some that had broken (and was a freaking mess!) that I had even replaced but didn't throw out because of course, there were a few broken bits left. (Rolling my eyes, at myself.) Second, I rooted through all our recycling bins and the bathroom for shampoo, conditioner, liquid soap, lotion, gel, and any other hair care and skin care containers. I am continually amazed at 1. how rapidly we go through these containers and 2. how many are ancient or nearly empty and never thrown out? Theeeeeennnnnn, I made another bin! JUST like the last one! Below are pictures and instructions! Personal Care and Beauty Brigade® Collection Bin SETUP 1. Click the following link to print out this poster: Personal Care and Beauty Brigade Accepted Waste Poster 2. Set up the collection bin, attach the poster, and place.
Again, mine is for home use. For public I would cover the entire box in plastic, make the signs bigger, add my 'all recycling goes to benefit STR' sign and follow the advice listed below. Here's some tips direct from Terracycle on your container set up: 3. Collect at least 11 pounds (of any brand) of acceptable waste. (Reference poster you just printed out and weigh your bag to be sure! If you send less than 11 pounds, Terracycle won't award STR! Oh no!)
Here's what mine looks like in action! 4. Contact us for a shipping label. We've got this totally spiff form on our Contact Us page HERE. Go there, fill out your info and submit! You would be AMAZED at how much packaging just ONE family of four goes through in a month. Work, school, neighbors, and local business are all great resources for collection. In fact, I've approached local salons and spas for donations and several have already agreed! I'm so excited it'll all get recycled now!!! AND there are OTHER exciting opportunities yet to recycle for STR! Click HERE to review. I should note, the Tom's of Maine Brigade and the Garnier Brigade ARE separate. In order to earn points for STR they must be weighed and shipped separately, hence the two bins pictured below. For info on the Tom's of Maine Brigade (Mouthwash bottles and caps, Deodorant containers and caps, Toothpaste tubes and caps, Soap packaging, Floss containers, Toothbrushes) Click HERE. Thank you for reading! Can't wait to see what you've been collecting to recycle for Stephanie's Total Recovery!!!
